Introduction:

Past Thursday was going to be a normal day for people who lives in RR Venkatapuram village near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
But even before they could wake up a deadly gas leaked from a chemical factory nearby and jolted them out of their sleep.
Around 500 kg of chemical were airlifted from Gujarat and sent to Visakhapatnam on Thursdays to neutralize the impact of hazardous gas styrene that leaked at the plant in the early hours claiming upto ten lives.
A number of victims lay down unconscious street side as some volunteers formed them in into ambulances.
The leak was no intense that it turned into a fog and around 9:30 am could we understand what exactly it was as the thick fog that formed are cleared.
The gas spread to villages over a five kilometre radius.

  1. Name- LG polymer Factory 
  2. The company was established in 1961 as hindustan polymer to manufacture polystyrene.
  3. It was merged with McDowell & company of the UB group in 1978 and was taken over by South Korea based LG chemical in 1997.
  4. The factory products are general purpose polystyrene and high impact polystyrene expandable polystyrene, expandable polystyrene and plastic compounds.

Announcements by Andhra Pradesh chief minister:

YS Jagan Mohan cheif minister of Andhra Pradesh has announced Rs 1crore each as compensation of those who have been killed in the gas tragedy.
And those who are undergoing treatment on ventilator would get RS 10 lakh each.
Others who are hospitalized but not on ventilator would received Rs 1 lakh as compensation.


Antidote:- One of the antidote is drinking lot of water.

Here's what we know about Andhra Pradesh chemical gas leaks incident so far:
  • The national human rights commission of India issued a notice to state government and centre over death & suffering of people dur to poisonous styrene gas leak in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Reddy visited the king George Hospital where the affected are being treated.
  • Prime minister Narendra Modi took twitter & tweet that the situation in Visakhapatnam is being closely monitored.
              

What is styrene gas?

A styrene gas affects the CNS, throat, skin and other parts of the body.
It is highly Flammable and releases a poisonous gas when burnt.
Styrene gas cause and dizziness when inhaled.
According to standards US National library of medicine it is used to make polystyrene plastics, fiberglass, rubber and latex in its liquid form.
Styrene is used to make insulation, pipes, automobiles parts, Food containers, Luggage, Shoes,toys.

LG polymer Factory fined of Rs 50 crore for Vizag gas leak by NGT, ministry rays firms violated green norms.
