Introduction:

Suicide was the leading cause for non- coronavirus death across the world due tomorrow the distress triggered by the lockdown, revealed a new set of data compiled by a group of researchers.
The suicides are followed by migrants dying in accidents on their way back home (51), deaths associated with withdrawal symptoms (45), and those related to starvation and financial distress (36).
The group, comprising public interest technologist Thejesh GN, activist Kanika Sharma and assistant professor of legal practice at Jindal Global School of Law Aman, said 338 deaths have occurred from March 19 till May 2 and they are related to lockdown.
There have been a staggering number of suicides, caused by fear of infection, loneliness, lack of freedom of movement, and alcohol withdrawal during the lockdown.
'For instance, unable to handle withdrawal (a medical condition), as many as seven people have died after consuming aftershave and sanitizer lotions. A large number of migrant labourers stuck in quarantine facilities, away from family, died by suicide, fearing infection, and sometimes even the stigma attached to the disease,' the group said in a statement.
Other causes of the non-coronavirus deaths were exhaustion (24), including workers travelling long distances on foot or queuing for ration, police atrocity/state violence (11), lockdown-related crimes (12), including vigilantism for violating rules, and denial of medical care (38).

Santosh Kaur, a 65-year-old woman, resident of the Khurrampur village in Phagwara, committed suicide over the fear of the coronavirus.
Being in depression, her case underlines the impact of COVID-19 on people with underlying mental health issues.

RANCHI: A loader at the Ranchi airport, who came in close contact with the former Jharkhand administrative officer who died in Gurgaon, jumped off the third floor of Lake View Hospital in Bariatu in Ranchi where he was quarantined. Identified as Mangal Kachhap, the man, in his mid-thirties, initially sustained injuries and was rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) where he died during treatment. Meanwhile, in Giridih district, a 27-year-old teacher was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his residence while police recovered a note, apparently written by him, which said he has contracted Covid-19.

2 commit suicide in Bengal over fear of contracting coronavirus:-

Amid the coronavirus outbreak already claiming lives across the country, in the past 24 hours, two persons committed suicide in the past 24 hours in different parts of West Bengal, allegedly due to the COVID-19 scare infused depression.
In another incident, the cremation of a suicide victim was halted for a few hours on Thursday as it was rumoured that the man died of COVID-19 infection.
Premnath Bauri (45) of Ukhra village in West Burdwan district was suffering from fever since last Monday (March 23). On Friday morning his body was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in his house.

Haryana: 30-year-old man commits suicide in Gurugram:

A 30-year-old man committed suicide in Gurugram on Friday. He was suffering from "depression", officials said.
Expressing grief on the incident, the Gurugram district commisioner said, "In this unfortunate incident, the person was a bit disturbed and aggravated by disease (Covid-19) scenario."
The DC said that as per the report of the investigation officer, the deceased, identified as Mukesh, was suffering from mental depression.
He is survived by his wife and four kids.

According to the data, 80 people killed themselves due to loneliness and fear of being tested positive for the virus. The suicides are followed by migrants dying in accidents on their way back home (51), deaths associated with withdrawal symptoms (45), and those related to starvation and financial distress (36).
“There have been a staggering number of suicides, caused by fear of infection, loneliness, lack of freedom of movement, and alcohol withdrawal during the lockdown.
Other causes of the “non-coronavirus deaths” were exhaustion (24), including workers travelling long distances on foot or queuing for ration, police atrocity/state violence (11), lockdown-related crimes (12), including vigilantism for violating rules, and denial of medical care (38).
There are also 41 cases where the specific cause is not clear. An example of such an incident would be where there is a conflict between the account of the state and the family/friends of the deceased about the cause of the death, said Aman.
According to the latest Union Health Ministry data on Sunday morning, the coronavirus death toll in the country rose to 1,301. The number of cases climbed to 39,980.
The nationwide lockdown began on March 25 and will last till May 17.

Why are COVID-19 doctors committing suicide? 

Frontline healthcare workers are struggling with both mental and physical burdens stemming from the surge of patient deaths related to COVID-19. As they fend off the virus as best they can with PPE, they are finding there is no adequate protection from the emotional trauma. Doctors already have among the highest reported suicide rates, more than double the general population according to some surveys. Will the pandemic cause more to take their own lives?


Recently, Dr. Lorna Breen, a Manhattan ER doctor killed herself. Her father, Dr. Phillip Breen, told reporters that she didn't have any history of mental health problems, but recently had been shaken by her work with coronavirus patients, with some even dying even before they could be taken out of the ambulance. "She tried to do her job, and it killed her," Breen said of his daughter.


A 23-year-old EMT in New York worked for less than three months in his new career before ending his own life. The rookie technician was put to work on the Tactical Response Group which was working in the busiest COVID-19 areas of New York City. A few weeks before his suicide he reportedly told colleagues that the deaths were weighing on him.


Dr. Yelena Nepomnyashchaya was complaining about a lack of PPE on a conference call before also falling from her window. She was reportedly arguing against the planned repurposing of a hospital building for COVID-19 patients because it lacked equipment and properly trained staff. She is critical condition after her fall from the fifth floor.
